8 Seasons
Nature in the north changes constantly: the amount of sunlight increases and decreases, temperatures rise and fall, summer comes and autumn turns into winter…In the Land of the Sámi, there are eight seasons: in addition to spring, summer, autumn and winter we have the “spring-summer” (early summer), “summer-autumn” (late summer), “autumn-winter” (early winter) and “spring-winter” (late winter).
The rhythm of life of the Sámi, “a people of eight seasons”, has been based on the yearly cycle in nature. The migration instinct that today’s reindeer have inherited from the wild reindeer, the repeated rise of salmon in their spawning rivers, the ripening of the berry crop…Nature has dictated the annual working cycle.
