11 Images of Sámi Life Today cultural night

As part of the Ijahis Idja Indigenous Music Festival, the Sámi Museum Siida arranges a cultural night called Eleven Images of Sámi Life Today. With the help of the exhibition Eleven Images of Sámi Life Today and the stories of individual Sámi, the event will spotlight the many forms of modern Sámi culture. At the event, the creator of the exhibition, Cultural Researcher Jorunn Eikjok will tell about the exhibition and its goals and narrative methods. The discussion will also be attended by some of the interviewees of the exhibition: their stories create a picture of what Sámi life looks like at this moment. The 11 Images of Sámi Life Today cultural night will take place in Siida’s auditorium on Friday 17 August 2018 from 4 to 6 p.m. The event will be held in North Sámi and interpreted into Finnish and English. After the session in the auditorium, we will have a look at the exhibition together; there will also be an opportunity to discuss the theme with the creators of the exhibition and to celebrate the diversity and vitality of Sáminess.

The Eleven Images of Sámi Life Today exhibition depicts the present circumstances of twenty-seven Sámi from their own points of view. Through photographs, videos and stories told by the people themselves, the exhibition introduces the public to the diversity of Sámi culture, but also to the common features in their experiences.

The exhibition spotlights the vitality of Sámi culture, but also the doubts, choices and polarities individual Sámi have as concerns Sáminess, depicting the Sámi as modern representatives of an indigenous people.

Jorunn Eikjok, a social anthropologist and cultural producer, has interviewed twenty-seven Sámi from four countries for the exhibition. The Sámi groups represented by these individuals are the Lule, Skolt, North, South and Kildin Sámi. Half of the interviewees can speak their native Sámi language. Photographer Ola Røe has photographed the interviewees and all the other visual material of the exhibition.

The exhibition has been produced by the Várjját Sámi Museum in Norway and adjusted to Siida jointly by the Sámi Museum Siida and Eikjok and Røe. The Saami Council has also contributed to the financing of the exhibition.
