About Siida

Siida, which merges beautifully into its background, got a great deal of attention both in national and international architectural magazines after the building and the exhibitions were finished. Since then, Siida’s permanent exhibition has been an example for many exhibitions as concerns both the structure of the content and the technical solutions.

The building itself – designed by Juhani Pallasmaa – was finished in 1997. The new museum building and its permanent exhibitions were opened for the public on April Fool’s Day, on April 1, 1998. In Siida, we have the joint basic exhibitions of the Sámi Museum and the Nature Centre of Metsähallitus, facilities for temporary exhibitions, an auditorium, a customer service and other facilities for the public and a café/restaurant as well as collection, workshop and office facilities. The two stories of Siida cover altogether an area of 2,800 m², of which 1,100 m² are used for exhibitions.

The Siida estate is owned and managed by the state company Senate Properties. The main tenant Sámi museum - Saamelaismuseosäätiö administers the estate and rents out facilities for Metsähallitus’ Natural Heritage Services in Lapland and for Sarrit Ky, which provides restaurant services in the museum.
