Colours in the North, Light in Time – Paintings by Séverine Cuénod
After a number of graphic and artistic experiments, Séverine Cuénod from Switzerland has, for the past seven years, drawn his inspiration from the landscapes of Lapland – especially those of Inari and Sevettijärvi – in order to provide us with a fresh perspective. With the seasons, the harmony of Arctic beauty wells from a spectre of colours and exceptional light conditions. Cuénod’s works manifest a highly personal vision of this magical natural environment. Thanks to a variety of details, tones, lights, intimacy and moods vibrate, taking us towards poetry and beauty. The richness and the diversity of Nature give us the opportunity to grasp the core of Cuénod’s paintings. The great variety of details guides us towards our own emotional states.

The photographs of Adolfo Vera, a photographer who was born in Chile but lives and works in Finland, tell about the life of the Mapuche, an indigenous people in Chile, in southern Chile today. Because of centuries of colonialism, the Mapuche have gradually withdrawn from their traditional lands to the more secluded mountain areas of Chile. The natural riches ñ the minerals and the wide forests ñ†of the area south of the River Biobío interest big companies, and the pressure to utilize the resources have increasinly driven Mapuche families into a tight spot. The photograph exhibition accompanies a wider display of Mapuche culture at Siida.

Reijo Raekallio has drawn, engraved, painted and carved images of reindeer ever since his childhood, as reindeer have always been present by his home – almost “in the way”. Thus, the image of the reindeer has been etched into the artist’s mind to such an extent that he can recreate the images from memory. Almost all the works of the exhibition are recent: they have been created in the past few years.

Antti Haataja, a nature photographer with a Sámi background, has looked Arctic foxes in the eye on windbeaten highlands in the golden moments of the midnight; he has seen whales hunt in misty fjords, witnessed geese migrate through the fells in the autumn, skied in minus forty degrees in the light of the full moon during the polar night, and felt infinitely small when northern lights have exploded the firmament high above the fells. The wildlife of the north leads an intensive life in the summer, but life goes on in the dark of the polar night, too. The exhibition allows us to visit the wildlife of Sápmi from the highlands to the fascinating Arctic Ocean.

Life in the wilds of Lapland changed radically in the early 1960s, when the snowmobile Ski-Doo, which had been launched in North-America in 1959, was introduced into Finland. This technical device influenced both the natural environment and humans in many ways. The nature of Lapland’s wilds changed, as even the most distant corners of the wilderness could now be reached easily and fast. Unfortunately, this also meant breaking the silence of the wilderness. The greatest change, however, concerned people and their everyday lives. Now, the father of the family came home for the night, instead of staying for weeks in the woods. The exhibition Across the Unbroken Snow looks at the 50-year history of the snowmobile in Finland and the changes that its introduction brought about in people’s daily lives.
