This year marks the 70th anniversary of the birth of Leif Rantala, an expert in Kola Sámi culture and a long-time lecturer of Sámi language and culture at the University of Lapland. To celebrate the occasion, the Sámi Museum Siida and the Sámi Archives arrange a goodwill seminar for Leif Rantala on Saturday 7 October from noon to 4 p.m. and an exhibition on Rantala’s long career in the Sámi Museum Siida.

Experts on Sámi Museums Meet in Siida in August

An international meeting of specialists in Sámi museums called Indigeneity in the Museum will be held at the Sámi Museum Siida from 23 to 25 August 2017. The two-day-long meeting will spotlight Sámi exhibition policy and the practices of indigenous museums. Invitations to the meeting have been sent to more than twenty experts in the field of Sámi museums working in Sámi museums, and to academics specialised in the museum field in the Nordic countries. In connection with the meeting, there will also be a seminar for doctoral candidates with a unique opportunity of getting comments from top specialists in the field.

The Convalescent by Helene Scherfbeck will be at display in the Sámi Museum Siida in Inari from 25 July to 27 August 2017. The “opening” of the painting will take place on Monday 24 July 2017 at 5 p.m. There will be a unique presentation in Siida’s auditorium, in which Kirsi Hiltunen, the Head of Conservation in the National Gallery, will tell about Helene Scherfbeck’s work both in general and from the point of view of her special field. After the presentation, the audience can look at The Convalescent in the exhibition hall.

The National Museum donates an important Sámi collection to the Sámi Museum Siida

On 5 April 2017, the National Museum of Finland and the Sámi Museum Siida concluded a letter of intent according to which the National Museum will donate a collection of Sámi artefacts to Siida. The agreement celebrates the centenary year Finland–Sápmi 100 and the many years of co-operation between the two museums. The transfer of the collection greatly increases the attainability and influence of the Sámi cultural heritage in the Sámi area, offering the Sámi better possibilities for maintaining and developing their cultural heritage. The concentration of Sámi objects into Siida follows the principle of documentation responsibility between the museums.

Siida’s new children’s exhibition Gieddegeažis – By the Forest will be opened in April. The exhibition is a trip into Sámi children’s culture and the Arctic environment. The exhibition, produced by the Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida, is Siida’s gift to the children of the 100-year-old Finland. It is part of the Finland 100 Programme.

The Lady Day Festival in Hetta begins with the opening of the Raittijärvi – The Village of Kaijukka exhibition at the Fell Lapland Nature Centre on Thursday 23 March 2017 at 6 p.m. The exhibition will be open for the public from 24 March to 30 April 2017. At the opening, a book of photography by Jyrki Kallio-Koski will be published. This 160-page-long work consists of impressive photographs and texts that convey the unique atmosphere of the village Raittijärvi for the reader.
