The National Museum donates an important Sámi collection to the Sámi Museum Siida

On 5 April 2017, the National Museum of Finland and the Sámi Museum Siida concluded a letter of intent according to which the National Museum will donate a collection of Sámi artefacts to Siida. The agreement celebrates the centenary year Finland–Sápmi 100 and the many years of co-operation between the two museums. The transfer of the collection greatly increases the attainability and influence of the Sámi cultural heritage in the Sámi area, offering the Sámi better possibilities for maintaining and developing their cultural heritage. The concentration of Sámi objects into Siida follows the principle of documentation responsibility between the museums.

Siida’s new children’s exhibition Gieddegeažis – By the Forest will be opened in April. The exhibition is a trip into Sámi children’s culture and the Arctic environment. The exhibition, produced by the Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida, is Siida’s gift to the children of the 100-year-old Finland. It is part of the Finland 100 Programme.

The Lady Day Festival in Hetta begins with the opening of the Raittijärvi – The Village of Kaijukka exhibition at the Fell Lapland Nature Centre on Thursday 23 March 2017 at 6 p.m. The exhibition will be open for the public from 24 March to 30 April 2017. At the opening, a book of photography by Jyrki Kallio-Koski will be published. This 160-page-long work consists of impressive photographs and texts that convey the unique atmosphere of the village Raittijärvi for the reader.

The newest temporary exhibition of Sámi museum Siida is Raittijärvi – The Village of Kaijukka, which will be available for public in Inari October 16th 2016–March 12th 2017. The beautiful photography of Jyrki Kallio-Koski tells about life in the Sámi village of Raittijärvi over a span of forty years. The dialogue between man and nature recorded into the photos is genuine and most touching.

The exhibition deals with the life and handicrafts of Aili Mattus, an Inari Sámi craftsmaker. Through the exhibition Aili and the Dolls, the Sámi Museum Siida wants to spotlight the skill of a Sámi woman and women in general.
