Siida Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary Year

The Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida in Inari will soon have its 20th anniver-sary (1998–2018). A great reason for celebration! Siida’s operations have grown and become more varied, and visitor numbers have multiplied compared to the early estimates. The number of employ-ees has also doubled since the first years. The anniversary year will show in many ways in Siida’s activities. Siida will celebrate its 20-year existence by having an open house on 27 March 2018.

The programme of the 2018 Skábmagovat Indigenous Film Festival – a festival now arranged for the 20th time – has been published. The festival will celebrate the occasion by spotlighting North America and Indigenous resistance with the theme“Hurray for Life”.

Siida yields record visitor numbers

A considerable increase in tourist numbers in the village of Inari also shows in the Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre SIIDA. The numbers of all visitors and exhibition visitors were record high for the year 2017. According to a study made by the Finnish Museums Association, every museum visitor spends an average of 49.40 euros in the area in connection with a visit to a museum. On the basis of the 2017 visitor numbers, Siida’s visitors to the exhibitions and events of the house (61,186) have brought the total amount of 3.02 million euros to Inari.

The Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida in Inari has followed the number of guests visiting Siida throughout the history of the House. On 1 December 2017, the one millionth visitor Paolo Moriconi from Italy to Siida’s exhibitions stepped in. He was awarded a gift voucher to Siida Shop and a Siida Pass that entitles him to free visits to Siida’s exhibitions for the rest of his life.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the birth of Leif Rantala, an expert in Kola Sámi culture and a long-time lecturer of Sámi language and culture at the University of Lapland. To celebrate the occasion, the Sámi Museum Siida and the Sámi Archives arrange a goodwill seminar for Leif Rantala on Saturday 7 October from noon to 4 p.m. and an exhibition on Rantala’s long career in the Sámi Museum Siida.

Experts on Sámi Museums Meet in Siida in August

An international meeting of specialists in Sámi museums called Indigeneity in the Museum will be held at the Sámi Museum Siida from 23 to 25 August 2017. The two-day-long meeting will spotlight Sámi exhibition policy and the practices of indigenous museums. Invitations to the meeting have been sent to more than twenty experts in the field of Sámi museums working in Sámi museums, and to academics specialised in the museum field in the Nordic countries. In connection with the meeting, there will also be a seminar for doctoral candidates with a unique opportunity of getting comments from top specialists in the field.

The Convalescent by Helene Scherfbeck will be at display in the Sámi Museum Siida in Inari from 25 July to 27 August 2017. The “opening” of the painting will take place on Monday 24 July 2017 at 5 p.m. There will be a unique presentation in Siida’s auditorium, in which Kirsi Hiltunen, the Head of Conservation in the National Gallery, will tell about Helene Scherfbeck’s work both in general and from the point of view of her special field. After the presentation, the audience can look at The Convalescent in the exhibition hall.
