The exhibition Viidon Sieiddit – New Dimensions of the Sámi Relationship to Nature is a Sámi environmental art exhibition, which spotlights the possibilities of a new kind of Sámi nature awareness and sensitivity through photography, videos, sound and music. The Viidon Sieiddit exhibition is available for the public at the Sámi Museum Siida 4 October 2018 – 31 March 2019.

Lapland’s Dark Heritage project gives lectures in Siida

The researchers of the project Lapland’s Dark Heritage – which has already visited Inari a few times – welcome the public to a lecture night in Siida. The Lecture Night will be held in Siida’s auditorium on Tuesday 14 August 2018 from 5 p.m. onwards. During the two-hour event, we will hear about both local and more distant archaeology from different points of views. The occasion is free for everyone.

The Sámi Museum is launching a project called “Ukkometsojen ulkomuseo” (“The Open-Air Museum of Old Male Capercaillie”), which has received funding from the Finnish National Board of Antiquities. Through the project, the Museum will expand the contents and develop the existing services of the Open-Air Museum. The Open-Air Museum is one of the great attractions of Siida in summer. As a result of recent restoration and maintenance work, its meaning has even increased lately.

Ijahis Idja Music Seminar in August

What is the significance of the Sámi having a music festival of their own? What did Sámi music look like fifteen years ago? What about now? What would we have if there was no Ijahis Idja Festival? These questions, and many other, will be reflected on at the Music Seminar of Ijahis Idja (“Nightless night” in English) in the Sámi Museum Siida In Inari, Finland in August. The seminar will take the form of a panel discussion led by Aslak Paltto. The panel will consist of Annukka Hirvasvuopio-Laiti and a group of other main figures of the Ijahis Idja Festival. This will give the audience a unique glimpse of what has happened behind the scenes, of memories from the past, and of visions of the future!

Sámi Museum Siida brings together experts on indigenous cultural heritage

The project “Culturally and Socially Sustainable Museum. Indigenous Representations and Sámi Culture in the Sámi Museum Siida” by the Academy of Finland will have its closing seminar Áigi lea buoremus oahpaheaddji (Time is the best teacher) in the Sámi Museum Siida in Inari 28.8.–29.8.2018. The seminar will look at Sámi and indigenous views on museums, museum practices and the safeguarding of cultural heritage. The seminar will be arranged by the Sámi Museum Siida, the University of Lapland and the Giellagas Institute of the University of Oulu in cooperation with EMRIP, the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The Skolt Sámi Heritage House and its collections in Sevettijärvi are run by the Sámi Museum. The Heritage House will open for the summer season on 11 June and be open through the summer, until 20 September. In the course of the summer, crafting demonstrations and various other events will be arranged for visitors both from near and far at the Heritage House!

The Sámi Museum Siida will have the opening ceremony for the summer season of its Open-Air Museum on Monday, 4 June 2018, from 5 to 7 p.m. At the opening ceremony, we will highlight hot to take care of architectural heritage, because we have done – and continue to do – restoration work in our open-air museum. We will introduce the public to the results of this work and offer ideas for those who are planning restoration or have already begun with it.
