The First Half of the Year 2012 at Siida

In the first half of this year, the Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida presents exhibitions on beautiful nature photographs as well as a visiting exhibit on the culture of the Mapuche, an indigenous people of Chile. The events of the year 2012 start with the Skábmagovat Film Festival, which is arranged for the 14th time. At the end of February begin the nature nights of the Nature Centre.

Bivttastallat – Making Clothing

In its last special exhibition of the year, the Sámi Museum Siida will present clothing and accessories designed and made by Maarit Magga from the village of Vuontisjärvi in Enontekiö. Magga, a specialist in traditional Sámi arts and crafts, uses reindeer materials also for new types of clothes that can be worn in modern contexts. In addition to clothing, the exhibition presents notes from the artisanís diary as well as models made and photographs taken during the sewing process.

This year, the European Heritage Day, September 7, has cultural routes as its theme. The Heritage Day in the municipality of Inari begins in Ivalo with a guided bus tour to the village of Inari. As guides, we will have Matti Lehtola, a specialist on the locality, and the students who study tourism at the Sámi Education Institute SAKK.

Siida Open Every Day in Summer

The Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida will switch to summer opening hours on June 1. In summer, Siida is open every day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. On the same day, the Open-Air Museum of the Sámi Museum and the Skolt Sámi Heritage House in Sevettijärvi will be opened for the public.
