Experts on Sámi Museums Meet in Siida in August

Aug 21, 2017 08:10 AM

An international meeting of specialists in Sámi museums called Indigeneity in the Museum will be held at the Sámi Museum Siida from 23 to 25 August 2017. The two-day-long meeting will spotlight Sámi exhibition policy and the practices of indigenous museums. Invitations to the meeting have been sent to more than twenty experts in the field of Sámi museums working in Sámi museums, and to academics specialised in the museum field in the Nordic countries. In connection with the meeting, there will also be a seminar for doctoral candidates with a unique opportunity of getting comments from top specialists in the field.

The meeting is part of the project that Siida – the Sámi Museum and Metsähallitus’s Northern Lapland Nature Centre – launched in 2016 on the renewal of Siida’s permanent exhibitions. The present main exhibition of Siida, which introduces the visitor to Sámi culture and the natural conditions of the north, was opened in 1998. Work on the manuscript of the new main exhibition has begun, and the new exhibition will be opened after Siida’s extension has been completed in 2022.

This is the first time that specialists in Sámi museums have been invited to a common meeting like this. Indigeneity in the Museum is an important move in the development of Sámi exhibition policy and work on museums; it is also the beginning of greater and deeper co-operation between specialists in the field of Sámi museums.

As part of the expert meeting Indigeneity in the Museum, there will be an open occasion in Siida’s auditorium on Thursday 24 August 2017 from 9 a.m. to noon where the keynote speakers of the meeting will speak. After their contributions, the audience can ask questions and discuss the themes with the speakers. The occasion will be conducted in English. After the lectures and the discussion, the experts will continue their closed meeting.
