Ijahis Idja Music Seminar in August

Jul 13, 2018 09:47 AM

What is the significance of the Sámi having a music festival of their own? What did Sámi music look like fifteen years ago? What about now? What would we have if there was no Ijahis Idja Festival? These questions, and many other, will be reflected on at the Music Seminar of Ijahis Idja (“Nightless night” in English) in the Sámi Museum Siida In Inari, Finland in August. The seminar will take the form of a panel discussion led by Aslak Paltto. The panel will consist of Annukka Hirvasvuopio-Laiti and a group of other main figures of the Ijahis Idja Festival. This will give the audience a unique glimpse of what has happened behind the scenes, of memories from the past, and of visions of the future!

Ijahis Idja Music Seminar in August

Ijahis Idja 17.-19.8.2018 in Aanaar.

The indigenous music festival Ijahis Idja is the only music event in Finland focusing on Sámi music. In addition to the Sámi, other indigenous peoples also perform at the festival every year. From the start, the Music Seminar has been an important part of the festival, and it has offered a discussion forum for musicians, forces in the field of music, and music enthusiasts.

This summer, Ijahis Idja will celebrate its 15th anniversary. The DJ collective A Tribe Called Red from Canada will be the main performer of the 2018 festival. Other performers will include Solju, a finalist at the Finnish selection competition for the Eurovision Song Contest, the Norwegian Sámi pop star Kevin Boine, and Tundra Electro, which will take the stage at a big Sámi festival for the first time.

As part of the festival, the Sámi Museum Siida will arrange, this year too, a music seminar on 18 August from noon to 2 p.m. in the Siida Auditorium. The seminar is open and free for everyone. The discussion languages are Finnish and North Sámi, but, if needed, interpretation will be provided.
