Siida’s Open-Air Museum Day provides programme for the whole family

Jul 14, 2016 11:50 AM

As part of the Inari Weeks, Siida arranges an Open-Air Museum Day this year, just like last year, too. On Friday 22 July there will be a handicraft workshop, guided tours, gold panning, a competition on throwing the Sámi lasso and a plant trail for children, etc. on the historical premises of Siida’s outdoor museum.

The Open-Air Museum Day is arranged by the Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida, Restaurant Sarrit and the Gold Prospectors’ Museum. The programme on Friday 22 July will start at 10 a.m. with a thematic tour of the Open-Air Museum. The guiding will be done in Finnish, and another similar guided tour will take place the same day at 4 p.m.

During the day, visitors can make – for a small fee on materials – a unique souvenir of their own at the handicraft workshop and learn more about gold panning, guided by employees from the Gold Prospectors’ Museum. During this family day, there will be a competition on throwing the Sámi lasso and a trail that focuses on wild plants for children. The lasso-throwing competition starts at noon, and participants can register for the it either at the gate of the Open-Air Museum, or on the spot. The plant trail, created by the Northern Lapland Nature Centre, is available for the visitors all day.

Restaurant Sarrit will put up a small café in the Open-Air Museum, selling coffee and at least Finnish-style pancakes. They will also serve smoked whitefish – if Lake Inari shows its favourable side and provides the fish.

A more detailed programme of the Open-Air Museum Day is available in the Calendar of Siida’s website. The whole programme on the premises of the outdoor museum is included in the ticket to Siida, but a fee of a few euros will be taken for the materials used at the handicraft workshop.

The Open-Air Museum Day will climax with the film show “On the Upper Reaches” at 5 p.m. The film, shown at the auditorium, is free for everyone.
