Summer at the Skolt Sámi Heritage House

May 28, 2018 09:48 AM

The Skolt Sámi Heritage House and its collections in Sevettijärvi are run by the Sámi Museum. The Heritage House will open for the summer season on 11 June and be open through the summer, until 20 September. In the course of the summer, crafting demonstrations and various other events will be arranged for visitors both from near and far at the Heritage House!

As usual, the Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation and the Sámi Museum Siida will jointly open the summer season and the Skolt Sámi Week in Sevettijärvi. On the opening day, 11 June 2018, coffee will be served at the Heritage House, and, in the evening, there will be seine fishing arranged by the Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation and the Sámi Education Institute. The location of the seine fishing will be determined later.

The Skolt Sámi Heritage House is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until the 20th of September, and, this summer, handicraft demonstrations will be held regularly at the House. The Skolt Sámi Week continues on 12 June with dancing the quadrille at the Heritage House; the week culminates with a workshop on baking salmon pie in the Pechenga way at the Heritage House on 13 June.

On 20 July, the Inari Weeks will be launched at the Skolt Sámi Heritage House. The programme of the occasion consists of guiding, crafting demonstrations and old films from the archives. The audience will also be introduced to a multidisciplinary and communal research project coordinated by the Sámi Museum on the integration of the Skolt Sámi in Finland in 1939–49.

On 6 September, we will have a special autumn day in Sevettijärvi. As every year, the Sámi Museum will offer the audience – both from near and far – a diverse and interesting programme at the Heritage House.

The Heritage House operates in a former Skolt Sámi homestead, that is, in a “Skolt home” and its outbuilding. On the premises of the Heritage House, there is also an open-air museum, which introduces visitors to the summer quarters of the past Suenjel Skolt Sámi community.

In addition, the Heritage House has a small museum shop, which sells Skolt Sámi handicrafts, souveniers, literature, etc. The House has free entry, and it is situated in Sevettijärvi at Sevettijärventie 9041.
